On to a new project!

I've got so many projects I want to do and so little time these days. Here is the newest project. I'm tatting an edge for a friend of my mother. She had several hankies in storage and wanted to give them to me. It seems her mother did crochet edges and never used these hankies. I asked her to pick one for me to take and 'regift' her. Here is the hanky and the beginning of an edge.

I chose an edge from Mary Konior's book, "Tatting with Visual Patterns". I think this is the bride's maids pattern. I'll have to check again and let you know if it's different.

As you see, I've got a long way to go. One note...I really like the edging patterns which help you visualize the corners. Now, I just hope this will repeat 'just right' and fit the hanky I've got.

On another note, I would love to be able to respond to your wonderful comments but have been unable to do so.... I've tried everything. So, I'm at a loss on that one.

I will tell you, I'm really looking forward to TAT days this September. I hope your weekend is grand!

  1. That's a gorgeous edging! And the width of it makes it really special. The hanky will look wonderful. I'll have to go look this one up in my books.

  2. That's a beautiful edging, John! I find that if the edging is slightly longer than the side of the hanky, it's very easy to ease in the little bit of fullness. However, if the edging is slightly shorter than the hanky, the hanky looks bunched and the edging looks stretched.

  3. Your tatting is wonderful - the edging looks super already! I have only attached one edging - to a ROUND centerpiece of fabric. I'm not very confident about doing those corners, so I'm currently choosing a hanky edging very carefully :)

  6. All of a sudden we're seeing 'drawn thread' hankies, which makes them so attractive! (Gina just received a beautiful one from Wendy). And this edging is perfect! I love the 'deeper' ones.

Because I keep Mary's book by my computer, I was able to see that this edging is called "Bo-Peep!. Very pretty, and looks wonderful. It is great that she shows how to do the corner!

I see you're using the metal Boye shuttle, and I'm wondering if it's a newer or older one. Originally they made them so that the bobbin fit on the end of the shuttle to wind it, but for some reason the ends of the newer ones are too wide for the bobbin! I've wondered why they changed that useful design.

I occasionally use my original Boye shuttle that I bought at the five and ten in the '50s when I was 12 (showing my age!), although I didn't tat anything with it until the 1990s, since I couldn't figure out HOW to tat!! I now use Aeros as I prefer the 'real' crochet-type hook), but I do like the feel of the metal Boye shuttle in my hand.

Bobbin shuttles were a great invention and Boye was among the first to make them (1920s or earlier). In fact, I thought the metal Boye shuttles were the ONLY shuttles used for tatting! No one seems to know why the holes are in them, but I think it made the metal easier to bend into shape. Just my theory!

  8. It will make a gorgeous edging, John. I was just tatting from that book last night, leafing through to admire all MK's patterns yet again.

  12. Hi John, I'm Carlton another man who does tatting. I've made four Brides Hankies. I love this pattern and looking of this pattern. The book is very expensive. Would you share this pattern with me? My email is Slaterstm@yahoo.com. If not I understand. Carlton
