Why is it that I don't do anything simply....?!

I'm working on the back part of the baby bonnet. And yes, just to remind you, I'm not using a published pattern....*I ask myself "WHY???!!!*

Normal is not one of my usual labels. I've been trying to figure out why I'm not satisfied with the older baby bonnet patterns. It may be because they appear to be a bit flimsy...but, I don't know that to be true. Oh, well I'll keep plugging along with my version.

Here is the progress so far.

As I'm tatting this row, I begin to think that I need the back to be a bit more 'oval' than half round. So, I believe I'm going to add a couple small flowers in the middle of the next round. This will begin to stretch the half round into an oval in addition to bringing the flowers of the top into the back of the bonnet.

Here's another look. So, what do you think? Half round or somewhat oval?

I will probably finish the row and add the flowers this evening. I'll show you the progress when I can figure out if it's the 'right' thing to do.

Until then,
PEACE!
john

  1. I think a somewhat oval back would be beautiful! As to why you don't do anything simply... I think you have a vision of what you want, and no one else has created exactly what you like. Go for it!

  4. I have not been excited about patterns for bonnets, either- but if yours works out, I'd sure like the pattern even if its just a couple of pictures with the stitch counts on them. I'd even be willing to pay you for it.

  5. Hi John, looking good.
yes, you need to be more oval, unless you are planning on having the bottom of the bonnet gather together with the ties.
think of how the back of a head looks, narrow at the neck (what little neck babies have) wider at the ears and then narrow at the top.
the half round you have would work for the ears to top of head part. you need a ears to neck area to really fit well.
    your tatting is very good.
I often tell people who stop when I am demoing that men can tat, that in fact men are very technical tatters, there work is exquisite. it must be the analytical, or engineering bent of men's brains. and yes, I know I am not political correct, but it is true. generally speaking.

  7. Yes, a bit more oval would do the trick. I have to say that your tatting has to be the most beautiful I have ever seen. I could just look at it all day. Your stocking is my favorite article of tatting ever.

  8. Hi John, it's so pretty as far as I can assume it this way. I am for oval, because the neck is pretty much smaller than the head and otherwise you won't be able to close it around the head without folding the beautiful pattern!. I fully can understand your way of working. I can't follow any pattern in any matter of creative technique, my head sees some vision of something else, and most the time I create my own style and way of doing! But that's our thrill and fun, isn't it! Have a nice day and enjoy the progress!

  9. Thank you to you all!! Still chugging away on how to proceed. I think I'm about to attempt the next step.

Suztats, the thread is DMC Cebelia #30. Only because that's what I had on hand and a bit more dainty than the usual #20.

    Again, thanks for you responses!
